your ride

I was reading the hat thread and was thinking that when I heard the cut Randy posted, I loved the sound of his ride when he wasn't paying the bell but the bell seemed to not be on the same cymbal, it was so much louder and deeper than the shimmering shoulder. I saw Chester play in a clinic in 1984 and he was playing a 602 ride that had the MOST KILLER bell sound, but the bell of the Sabian didn't sound right to me on that piece.

I have a 20" Zildjian med ride that my Dad bought me when I first strted playing that can do anything pretty well and it's just gotten better sounding. I can bash on it and still pay articulated notes. The bell is kinda small and it takes extra care to hit it cleanly, but it's a good all-around ride.

Anyone play any rides that they really like?

I LOVE my Zildjian A 20" Medium from 1976. I got this cymbal new and am the original owner. It has such great wash, killer bell, and nice stick sound. The only thing it doesn't work well for is loud rock, but that's why I have a Ping. [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

Hey Bernard,

I have a 20" med K and a 20" A Zildjian rides.

For me, the A is nice for higher volume gigs Like outdoor type gigs (especially the bell) but
90% of the time I use my K. It's also got a small bell but it's dark and EARTHY and I love to try and cajole those type tones out of it. It also very "crashable" and often, in the smaller clubs I will just set up with kick, snare, hats and my trust K and just grooooooove.

I believe I've had my K for about 20 years, it's become part of my drumming vibe.

I have a 20" A Custom, a la Vinnie, which I bought about ten years ago (used) for a good price. I don't really like it now, because it's waaaaaaay too washy. It's basically a big crash cymbal. The bell sounds great, though, and it's great for rock, but I've got about a pound of tape on the bottom to dry it out a little.

I used to have a ping ride, too, but it cracked. Great definition, but really high-pitched.

Like hihats, I have a few rides too. The reason i use the Chester rid elive and on that recording was live it projects very well. The bell I wanted for the tracking because I knew in the bridge section was going to be a sudo latin part needing a strong bell.

For rides I have: garibaldi signature '22 sabian
paiste signature full ride '20
sabian '21 dry ride

Most of my cymbals are rides for a variety of rooms and styles of music. The ones I use the most are:

20" Paiste Traditional thin w/ one rivet, used as a crash too. dark w/ bright attack

18" Paiste Sound Creation flat ride, kinda dark, w/ lots of attack.

20" Paiste 602 med flat ride, nice balance between attack and sustain,

22" Paiste Sound Creation dark, loud and dark w/ a peircing bell.

21" Sabian Dejohnette mini-bell. dark w/ lots of attack, minimal sustain.

I am using a Zildjian 22" Deep Ride, circa 1990. I love this cymbal. I has exquisite stick definition and an extraordinary bell. You also really get on it for the heavier rockl stuff. In the studio it is tremendous! I used to use a 22" Earth Ride. It seemed to have fairly limited musical applications, due to its extraordinarily strong stick definition and limited (non-exsistent wash). I would like to have another though I think I would opt for the 20" model. It seems to be brighter and have more musical versatiility. <marquee>"Keep It In The Pocket" PT.</marquee>

I use a number of Zildjians, all 20".

K Custom Ride
K Custom Dry Light
K Custom Dry
A Custom Ping
K Heavy

I use the A Custom, Dry Light and Heavy the most. I gotta say I saw A Perfect Circle last week (with Mars Volta) and was BLOWN AWAY by Josh's cymbal sound. It was so clear without being brittle and was really fantastic so I gotta check some Paiste stuff out. I've usually stayed away from them but I gotta let go of my Zildjian bias at some point. 20 & 22 Traditionals, those are the best jazz rides that I've ever had. I love them.
20 Signature Dark Dry, a great all around cymbal that you can use all the time and it will fit perfectly, and records beautiful.
20 Traditional flat ride and 20 flanger ride for alternate sounds, and a 20 Alpha for loud rock (and low budget gigs forums

).
I just ordered a 21 New Signature Dark Energy, and I think it would be my favorite ride for some time forums
